To the Birthday Boy

Nineteen years ago today, my parent's brought home the little brother that I had been asking and praying for. For eight years it had been just Steven (big brother) and me. I so desperately wanted a little sibling to boss around, teach him the importance of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and most importantly, 'force' him to idolize me the way I had idolized Steven in my short little life.

Never did I imagine that Dylan would, in fact, be the one to teach me about life.

May 2013 - Me, Dylan, Steven, Destiny (Sister-in-law)

Around the age of 5, Dylan became very ill. For weeks, the local doctors tried everything they could to help and diagnose him, but nothing added up. Eventually, it was decided that he needed to be rushed to Primary Children's Hospital in Salt Lake City, UT. He continued to decline, when finally an intern was able to diagnose him with a rare childhood disease: Kawasaki's.

Kawasaki's Disease is very treatable, if found in the first 10 days. At this point, Dylan had gone un-diagnosed, and untreated for nearly 3 weeks. He had a long road ahead of him. Months were spent in Salt Lake, being fed through a PIC line. He lost his gallbladder and had a long list of other complications.

I remember the day he finally got to come back home. He looked frail and nothing like himself, but he was smiling. Even while going through so much pain and suffering at such a young age, he continued to bring light to those around him.

He fought. He survived. And as the years have passed since, he has continued to teach his big sister some of the greatest lessons in life.

1.   Dylan's time in Primary Children's taught me that life is short. You never know what tomorrow is going
to bring. Remember to always tell your loved ones you love them. Don't take a single breath for granted.

2.   He taught me that miracles do happen.

3.   He is the perfect example of my "life motto": Things turn out best for the people that make the best of the       way things turn out. Life has a way of throwing challenges Dylan's way, yet he always overcomes them
with a smile on his face.

4.   In middle school, Dylan had a classmate with physical disabilities. One day in PE, it was a requirement
run a full mile. Everyone had finished their mile and were sitting on the bleachers waiting for Jeffrey to
finish when Dylan quietly got up and finished that mile by Jeffrey's side. Cheering him on, and at
some points being a shoulder to lean on. The teacher told my parents there was not a dry eye in the gym
      that day.

In this moment, my little brother taught me compassion and the importance of doing what you feel is right,      even if it may not be the "popular" thing in the moment.

5.   Never in 19 years have I heard Dylan speak one ill word of anyone. He is open-minded and accepting
      of everyone.

6.  Don't be afraid to be yourself. Work hard and achieve your goals.

Clearly, I could go on and on, but I won't.

I should have been the one to teach him. I should have been the one to give him things to aspire to be. Instead, it is he who has made me a better person, every single day for the past 19 years.

Quite simply, my little brother is my hero.

He recently moved here to Laramie to attend the University of Wyoming. Currently, he is volunteering his time helping the UW football coaching staff and hopes to someday be a coach himself. Nothing brightens Wyatt's day more than when Uncle Dylan stops by to play. I could not be more blessed to have such strong role model for my son to look up to and aspire to be.

Happy Birthday, Dylan! We love you!

Throwback Thursday - School Dances

button

Before we get started down this humiliating Memory Lane, let's cover a few basic details.

1.   I was not a girly girl in high school. Basically, I would have chosen swimming in a tank of jellyfish over getting dressed up for prom or homecoming. If you understood my fear of jellyfish, you would know just how serious I am. In fact, if I'm being honest, I used to hope and I pray I wouldn't get asked.

2.  I hated having my picture taken.

3.  My mom is very stingy when it comes to pictures, so I don't have many throwbacks photos. She's not sharing! Including the professional ones, so candids it is.

4.  Big up-dos were the thing - I swear.

So...

Junior Homecoming - 2003
Junior Prom - 2004
^^ That guy is my bff from back home. If memory recalls, his girlfriend at the time was from another town (as they usually were) and she would only let him go if he took me. Ah, the high school drama. How I don't miss you.

Senior Prom - 2005
I hated dress shopping, still do. That year we decided to have my dress made. The lady finished it the day before prom and it was about 2 sizes too big and too late to fix it. Awkward.

It's a Sunshiny Day

Well, at least in blog-land, that is. Here in Wyoming, we are on day 7 or something like that of straight rain. Whaaat?! That just does not happen around here. Snow, yes. Rain? Never. At least not that drizzle all day, every day type of rain.

It's been several years since I've been in this much "weather related" pain. Back in the 'ol high school days, I used to joke with everyone that I should be a weather woman. I'd wake up in the morning, and before I even got out of bed, I knew what the weather was doing by the way my body felt. There were many days I had to roll out of bed (quite literally) in an attempt to get to school.

Once again, I have been back in that situation this week. Which has meant no workouts since Sunday. I wish it was something I could push myself through and manage some exercise, but it hasn't been possible. Walking up the stairs is exhausting this week. I can count that as a workout, right?

But that's the end of that whining. We desperately need the moisture, so I'll bite my tongue and continue to "enjoy" my quality time with the heating pad.

On to Sunshine. Last week, Ms. Wendy tagged me in her Sunshine Award post, so here I am answering her questions!

1. What's your favorite thing about yourself?

I'm a very open-minded person. I have my own thoughts and beliefs, of course. And I feel very passionate about them. However, I've always had the ability to the see the big picture. In any given situation, I usually can understand where someone is coming from and respect them for it. I make an effort to not be judgmental and keep in mind that no one ever knows the full story.

2. What is your absolute dream job?

Social Work.

3. What is the nicest thing you've ever done for someone?

I think a big part of doing good for others, is not expecting anything in return - including praise. I try to volunteer and help out as much as possible. We'll just leave it at that :)

4. What is your favorite book?

I'm a reader. Love to lose myself in a good book. Surprisingly, as much as I read, I don't think I have one favorite book. I love a good mystery (James Patterson, Mary Higgins Clark, to name a couple). I am a big Fantasy dork. LOTR, Harry Potter, yes, even Twilight. I love the City of... books. Lovely Bones. The Giver.

5. What is your next big goal for yourself?

Currently, to get to a healthy weight and build muscle.
6. What is your favorite weekend getaway?

7. Who is your biggest cheerleader in life?

He is always cheering me on and lifting me up.

8. What is your favorite inspirational quote?

I don't know if it would be considered "inspirational", but my life motto is:

"Everything turns out best for the people who make the best of the way things turn out."

9. What blogs do you read daily?

Way too many to name!

10. What's your favorite song right now?

Anything country!

I nominate.... anyone who hasn't had the chance to play along! Same questions. If you answer them, let me know so I can check it out!

Guest Post - Getting In Shape: Body After Baby

Well, Fall is moving into Wyoming this week. 30 degree drop from last week. It's wet, chilly and I love it. I live for Fall, even if it does only last a month around here. However, my body is not dealing with the change very well. So, while I'm kicked back rotating out the heating pad, check out this guest post from the sweet, soon-to-be blogger, Caitlin. You can find her on Twitter @HealthyHudson!

----
Any of us who has experienced pregnancy and child birth knows how tough it can be to get your “pre baby” body back. And we all know it isn’t easy. You are getting used to having this wonderful little baby home with you, while trying to come up with a schedule, recover from delivery, maybe trying to breast feed for the first time – there is an endless list of adjustments going on associated with your new baby. Like I said, we all know it isn’t easy. There are, however, a number of different ways you can start to get back on track and get back in shape.

First, make sure you talk to your doctor. Your physician will most likely want to know what you are doing, what you are eating, and if it is healthy for you. If you are breast feeding you need to remember what you do and how you eat will eventually make its way into your baby. So you want to be sure you are eating a balanced diet and not consuming anything that could cause trouble with your baby’s delicate little body.

Once you have met with your doctor, look at making small changes. If you make too many changes all at once, the chances are you won’t stick to it over the long-term. Start by making sure you are drinking enough water to stay properly hydrated. Look at your diet and make sure you are eating balanced meals with protein, fruits, grains, and vegetables. Today it can be very tricky to go food shopping. What sounds like it is a healthy snack can wind up being full of fat and calories. A great place for help when it comes to healthymeal planning is ChooseMyPlate.gov. This website has plenty of great information including food shopping lists to make sure you are eating a healthy and well-balanced diet.

Obviously part of getting in shape needs to include some type of exercise. Just like making diet changes, start out small when getting back into an exercise regimen and build up over time. Trust me, getting started after childbirth will not be easy! But it will be gratifying to get back into a routine that includes healthy living. As you progress, something that looks like a solid exercise challenge is Focus t25. This looks like a high-intensity workout that will hit every area of your body and at 25 minutes, it won’t take up much time during the day which as we all know is key with a new baby around!

What I think is most important is to not be too hard on yourself. Like I said, your body has been put through a really tough process – childbirth. It will take time to just feel better and heal, let alone be ready to exercise on a regular basis. Just build it up over time and you’ll get there!

Thanks, Caitlin! Be sure to show her some love in the comments, and I hope to be back tomorrow!

Motivation Monday

Welcome back to Motivation Monday! Grab a button and come link up!

--------

Sorry I'm late to the game today, and it's going to be short and sweet. I procrastinated yesterday thinking I'd have time this morning, then ended up with one of those crazy Monday's we all know and love.

Nightly thunder/lightening storms the past week have forced me back inside for my workouts and back to DVDs for the most part. I've been in a major cardio mode for a few weeks in an effort to get my endurance back after my 2 week illness hiatus. Yesterday morning, I managed a 3 mile run with Wyatt. And by managed, I mean barely survived. I'm having some leg issues again, and in an effort to prevent ending up back in a boot AGAIN, I'm forced to re-evaluate my workouts. (I think I jinxed myself when I said no injuries in September. Someday I'll be healthy, right?).

It's been 6 weeks since I've had any significant weight-loss. Part of this is a plateau, sure. But, I feel a larger part is my actual workouts. After I finished JMBR, I tried several other types of exercise. All of which I love and have seen success with in the past. However, I think at this point in the game, I need more structure and someone yelling at me to go faster, harder and push myself.

Last night, I completed levels 1 & 2 of Extremem Shed and Shred and felt amazing after my workout for the first time in a long time. So, I'm going to go with it.

Starting tonight, I'm going to repeat 6 weeks of JMBR Phase 2 and 6 weeks of JMBR Phase 3. I do still plan on fitting in runs when the weather allows, but I will be scaling back the mileage until my leg issues subside. With the addition of running in my JMBR routine, I'm confident this well help me start seeing results again.

Every once and awhile, it's important to take a step back and evaluate where you're at. It's so important to find enjoyment in the journey. What works for one person, may not work for you. When it comes to fitness, it's a lot of trial and error. Learn from it and move forward.
